If your daughter has to live away from home to attend school, Fahan School in Sandy Bay, Tasmania offers a safe and stimulating environment for her in which to study and board.
Fahan offers a quality education. We are an all girls school (of approximately 365 students), operating in a relaxed and happy, ‘family’ environment where (although non-denominational) Christian values are lived as well as taught. While our students participate in a wide range of sporting and cultural interests, it is worth noting that the high standard of academic success of our students translates into equally high Tertiary Entrance scores.
Our new Senior Boarding Residence, catering for eighteen Year 11 and 12 boarders, has individual accommodation with all the latest modern conveniences including reverse cycle air conditioning and internet access. Our younger boarders, from Year 5 to Year 10, live in ‘Nateby’ – a home away from home – which offers inviting dormitory accommodation, a friendly, homely environment and home-cooked meals!
Plenty of boarding schools will claim to offer a facilitythat is a home away from home, but rare is it that such an outcome is achievable.
The vast majority of children would naturally far prefer to live at home but as we all know, there are many factors which necessitate their living at the school of their parent's choice.
Fahan School, however, is one which can justifiably lay claim to providing a facility which is as close as can possibly be achieved to a home environment. Situated amid beautifully landscaped gardens and overlooking the picturesque Derwent River in Hobart, the old homestead of Nateby is, literally that, a home.
Nateby, the original stately residence of a bygone day when the property was farmland, has undergone many changes in its lifetime but none more important than those which allow Fahan's boarding community to live in a comfortable, friendly and caring environment specifically organised to achieve these purposes.
Meals are prepared for this boarding family of girls just as they would be at home. In fact, there has been a whisper at times that certain dishes may even surpass these! Whilst the staff prepares the meals, the girls play an active role in setting, clearing and washing up - just like they might do at home.
Pastoral care within the boarding environment is seen as integral. The Resident House Mother ensures there is an older and younger member of the boarding house linked as 'sisters' to provide that additional support at times when someone is needed. This little/big sister relationship is a powerful means of ensuring friendships develop naturally without unnecessary fuss.
Boarding at Fahan is offered on a weekly or permanent basis. For those students from interstate or overseas, the day families in the school provide generous support through the provision of outings or overnight stays.
Boarding life can never fully take the place of home life but at Fahan there is a feeling that, if it had to be measured, boarding in Nateby comes a very close second.
