On Tuesday 7 February, Fahan students donned their blue and orange uniforms for the first day of the 2012 school year.

It was fitting that school went back this week in February as it also marked another special occasion - Fahan School’s 77th birthday.  Fahan School opened its doors for the first time on 8 February 1935.

There were many familiar faces as well as 58 new students joining the Fahan Community.

The Middle and Senior School students gathered together for the formal induction of the 2012 Student Leaders (see below for a list of the leaders).

Principal, Tony Freeman, spoke to the new Student Leaders, staff and students about what it means to be a leader.

He spoke about leadership not being a reflection of title or position but rather an opportunity to give selflessly for the benefit of others.

“Student leadership at Fahan carries with it responsibility. It requires people who can demonstrate those essential qualities of consideration, determination, courage and humility in order for it to be effective,” said Mr Freeman during his speech.

He encouraged the new leaders to see leadership as an opportunity to serve rather than to increase popularity.

Student leaders are chosen for their preparedness to make a contribution to the Fahan community. The selection process involves the girls making an application and then attending an interview, before the opinion of the Senior School students is sought in a poll.

The first week back at school is always an exciting time of catching up with old friends and making new ones.

Walking through the school grounds you might also notice some new artwork. The Year 12 students of 2011 have donated a beautiful sculpture, which has been placed in the rock garden in the centre of the campus, just below the TM Building. The artwork features the school logo with two birds perched on top of the tree.

We welcome all students, parents and staff back for what we are sure will be another outstanding year in education.
