Exploring Tasmania’s East Coast: Year 10 Outdoor Education Coast Program

10 March 2026

Our Year 10 students recently travelled to Tasmania’s East Coast as part of their Outdoor Education Coast Program, developing their surfing and rock-climbing skills while exploring some of the state’s most spectacular coastal landscapes.

In the lead-up to the trip, students designed their own program during Outdoor Education planning sessions, helping shape the expedition itinerary, activity focus and group logistics. A key focus of the experience was building independence, with students working in small groups to plan, prepare and cook their own meals while sharing camp responsibilities.

Students surfed at several locations along the coast, including Dodges Ferry, Redbill Beach in Bicheno and Friendly Beaches in Freycinet National Park. Each location offered different surf conditions, allowing students to build their confidence in the water while improving their understanding of the ocean.

Rock climbing at Lassis Wall in Freycinet National Park was another highlight of the program. Students challenged themselves on the rock while supporting and encouraging one another. In a memorable moment during the climb, students spotted an orca swimming past in the ocean below - a rare wildlife encounter. A seal was also seen along the coastline during the trip.

Beyond the main activities, students explored the natural beauty of the East Coast. A hike to Douglas-Apsley Gorge provided the opportunity to swim in the freshwater waterholes, and one evening the group walked to the lighthouse to watch the lunar eclipse under clear night skies.

The Coast Program encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones, build resilience and strengthen teamwork in a unique outdoor environment. It was wonderful to see students embracing new challenges and supporting one another throughout the experience.

Thank you to our wonderful Outdoor Education team for their guidance and support in creating such a positive and rewarding experience for our students.
